The Edgar Burton Christmas Food Drive is celebrating its 25th year, and the United Steelworkers Local 6500 is hosting a dinner on Nov. 23 to mark the occasion.
“From the beginning, when Edgar Burton first started working on the idea of feeding and supporting those less fortunate in our community, no one knew or thought that 'one more can' would become one of the largest food drives in Canada,” said USW Local 6500 president Rick Bertrand in a press release.
“As such, we wanted to be able , on this 25th anniversary, to recognize the tremendous care and community reach that Edgar was able to provide to Sudburians while at the same time showing tremendous consideration and recognition for those that might not have a Christmas meal as a family.”
With the event on Nov. 23, the Steelworkers is dedicating a night to celebrate the life, work and care that Edgar Burton fostered in creating a caring family of more than 168,000 Sudburians that collectively work every day to provide dignity and kindness to each other.
With the idea of “one more can” as the centrepiece of this event, Sudbury can truly make a difference in coming together and continue to build a city that is not only caring but greater, the union said in a press release.
All proceeds from the evening will be donated to the Edgar Burton Christmas Food Drive enabling the Sudbury Food Bank to work to ensure that all families in the City of Greater Sudbury have the ability of food on their shelves during the holiday season.
The event starts at 6 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m.. Tickets are $25 each or $200 for a table of eight. Music will be provided by Local 6500’s very own Chief Steward of Mines, Pascal Boucher with his band Under Six Feet.
Tickets are available by calling Roger Lafontaine at 705-675-3381 ext.239.
