A school bus struck a house near the Madeleine Avenue and Lasalle Boulevard intersection shortly before 4 p.m. today.
A neighbour told Northern Life the bus was turning onto Madeleine from Lasalle when it went off the road, climbed up the front yard and struck the home, coming to rest against a truck parked in the driveway, hanging over a retaining wall.
The bus struck and damaged the gas meter in the process, spewing natural gas fumes into the house and the street.
Neighbour Leo Bisson said he overheard the bus driver exclaim that she had both feet on the brake as she was turning the corner, but the vehicle was not responding.
Bisson said he helped three students off the bus, none of whom were injured in the incident. This was confirmed by Greater Sudbury Police. They were the only passengers on the bus.
Greater Sudbury Police and Union Gas workers attended the scene.
The gas has been turned off to the home and the house is being aired out.
Homeowner Gilles Giguere said he received a call from a neighbour about the crash, and rushed home to check on his house.
He confirmed the bus did hit the gas meter and the home was being aired out. Giguere also characterized the damage to his home and truck as fairly minor.
