The funds include $1 million for the Northern Water Sports Centre, to be located on the shores of Ramsey Lake, $795,000 for small business development at the Nickel Basin Federal Development Corporation, and $400,000 to support Penguin Automated Systems Inc. in the development of two prototype robots designed to inspect and map wastewater pipes.
Minister for FedNor, Tony Clement, made the announcement Jan. 9.
“Sports tourism is one of the fastest growing segments of our economy and the funding announced today will help position Greater Sudbury as a premier destination for regional, provincial, national and international sporting events,” said Thomas Merritt, Board Chair of the Northern Water Sports Centre.
“Establishing the Northern Water Sports Centre in Greater Sudbury will build on the strong event history of the Dragon Boat Festival and our paddling and rowing clubs to help attract thousands of athletes, coaches and visitors to the area.”
The funding is provided through FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development Program, which support projects that strengthen community economic development, enhance business development and growth, and facilitate innovation throughout the region.
