Former mayor John Rodriguez doesn't seem to mind that he will be the brunt of jokes Feb. 27.

“God knows there are a lot of funny things people can say about me,” Rodriguez said with a laugh.

After all, it's for a good cause. Rodriguez is the first Sudlebrity the Human League has opted to feature before a panel of eight “roasters.”

Leanne Tucker, executive director for the Human League, got the idea to organize a roast after watching President Obama roast Donald Trump at a recent gala event.

“To be able to laugh at oneself with a little encouragement from our peers is indeed a gift, and a great skill to have,” she said. “Former mayor John (Rodriguez) certainly possesses this skill. When I asked him to participate, his first question was, ‘Are they going to bring up the Elton John thing?’ to which I replied, ‘I certainly hope so.’ His reaction? A deadpan look, with a twinkle in his eye, and these words: ‘I’m in.’”

Rodriguez said he was happy to participate, since he had the chance to see firsthand the valuable work the Human League does.

“The Human League supplies breakfast for students in schools across the city,” he said. “It's an organization that puts children first.”

Rodriguez said when he taught at a Donovan area school, many of the students in his classroom took advantage of the breakfast service. It helped them put their best foot forward and have a productive day. It's worth the “sacrificial laugh.”

“We all have to be able to laugh at ourselves from time to time,” Rodriguez said.

Organizers of the event are still looking for roasters for its panel. Anyone interested in participating can contact humanleaguesudbury@live.ca.

Tickets to the show are now available. They can be purchased for $25 by phoning 705-670-8633.
