Causes $350K damage to garage and home

Four people have been left homeless after a fire in a two-car garage in Val Therese spread to a nearby home, causing an estimated $350,000 in damage, said Greater Sudbury Fire Services.

A man was working on his snowmobile inside the garage, when the engine compartment caught fire, said senior public safety officer Leo Frappier. When the fire quickly grew out of control, the man who had been working on the snowmobile immediately called 911.

“By the time we got there, the garage was fully involved, and the fire had spread into the attic of the home and then into the entire house,” Frappier said.

Seventeen firefighters attended the call on Feb. 20 at about 8:35 a.m. Firefighters left the scene in the early afternoon, around 1:30 p.m., Frappier said.

“The cold weather made fighting the fire a bit more difficult than usual,” Frappier said.
