Elgin Greenway open house goes May 9

Greater Sudbury will host an open house May 9 to hear ideas on how to turn Elgin Street into a green, sustainable and active transportation corridor.
Greater Sudbury will host an open house May 9 to hear ideas on how to turn Elgin Street into a green, sustainable and active transportation corridor.

The city is preparing a detailed design that will bring the project closer to reality, and is seeking more public input on the process.

“The Greenway will connect the new School of Architecture, the new market and proposed Rock of Fame,” said Mayor Marianne Matichuk, in a press release Tuesday.

“This is an exciting project for our city, and I encourage residents to come out and learn more about this opportunity to transform and grow not only our downtown, but to improve the image of our city.”

The public is invited to drop by the foyer at Tom Davies Square at 200 Brady St. between 6-9 p.m. to learn more about the draft conceptual plan and share feedback with the design team.

“The first public open house, held on March 19, and stakeholder input sessions were a great success,” Bill Lautenbach, General Manager of Growth and Development, is quoted as saying in the release.

“The design team has turned those ideas into a draft conceptual plan that we’d like to present and test with the public for further feedback.”

The Greenway is a partnership between the City of Greater Sudbury, Greater Sudbury Development Corporation, Rainbow Routes Association, Downtown Sudbury Business Improvement Area and Downtown Village Development Corporation. Funding is provided, in part, by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport.

The project is part of the Downtown Master Plan and Action Strategy, endorsed by Greater Sudbury city council in April 2012. The plan establishes a blueprint to transform the downtown core into an active, safe and diverse destination for people, businesses, not-for-profit agencies and new investments.
