Provincial funds in the amount of $100,000 will help MIRARCO (Mining Innovation, Rehabilitation and Applied Research Corporation) to produce a new software tool to help enhance mining operations.

With the new tool, mining companies will be able to generate short-term schedules that assign crews and equipment in line with the long-term plans of the businesses. This project will support four researchers and programmers and will benefit the mining sector by improving day-to-day operational scheduling decisions, said Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci.

“Currently, there is no software for optimized operational mine planning aligned with a long-term plan,” said Bartolucci. “I commend MIRARCO for again leading important research, right here in Greater Sudbury, to help improve the efficiency of our mines.”

“Thanks to the opportunity provided by the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation, MIRARCO will continue to develop local expertise and innovative products,” said Lorrie Fava, program manager, Ventilation and Production Optimization, MIRARCO. “In partnership with software suppliers and mining companies, we will undertake case studies within the project demonstrating the value delivered by this new decision-support software for operational mine planning.”

This project is being funded through NOHFC’s Emerging Technology program. Since 2005, that program has invested some $175 million in approximately 270 projects across the north, helping to create or sustain more than 1,900 jobs.
