City doles out community arts and culture grants

Sudbury council gave the green light for $81,000 in financial support for 25 not-for-profit community arts and cultural organizations, as recommended by the Community Arts and Culture Grant Advisory Panel, said the city in a news release.

Sudbury council gave the green light for $81,000 in financial support for 25 not-for-profit community arts and cultural organizations, as recommended by the Community Arts and Culture Grant Advisory Panel, said the city in a news release.

Since 2005, the municipality has more than doubled its annual budget allocations to support the operations of not-for-profit arts and cultural institutions.

“Greater Sudbury is a diverse and thriving community because we have strong and vibrant arts and cultural groups,” said Greater Sudbury Mayor Marianne Matichuk.

“On behalf of city council, we are proud to be able to support these groups and we wish them continued success.”

The Community Arts and Culture Grant Advisory Panel consists of local volunteers who evaluate applications based on willingness to foster an environment which promotes the pursuit of excellence in arts and cultural experiences, public access to those experiences and the preservation and enhancement of a diverse cultural identity.

Access to municipal funding to support the operations of community arts and cultural organizations is shared between the advisory panel and the Greater Sudbury Development Corporation which approved an additional disbursement of $496,000 through its Major Arts and Culture Grant Program earlier this year.
