Golfers raise $46K for cancer foundation

Once again, local golfers heard the call to join the fight against cancer and turned out in droves for the annual Strokes for Hope Golf Classic to benefit the Northern Cancer Foundation.

And once again, the event raised tens of thousands of dollars, making it one of the most successful golf fundraisers yet. The more than 120 golfers generated some $46,000 for the Northern Cancer Foundation.

The funds raised support cancer research and patient care programs at the Northeast Cancer Centre.

Tournament chair and Northern Life publisher Abbas Homayed said he couldn't be happier with the turnout and the amount raised.

“Sudbury benefits from a world-class cancer treatment facility and I'm extremely pleased that participants not only had a good time, but also raised more than $46,000 to support researchers and cancer patients right here in Northern Ontario,” Homayed said.

This years’ event drew many community partners, including Vale, Northern Life, Belanger Ford, Day, KGHM, BM Metals, RBC, PG Advertising and Dynamic Insurance, and hosted more than 120 golfers at Timberwolf Golf Club.

Over its 18-year history, Strokes for Hope has raised more than $640,000 for patients and their families seeking cancer treatment throughout northeastern Ontario.

As always, participants also had an opportunity to meet some of the student researchers who were on hand volunteering at the various holes throughout the course. Their studies often benefit from the fundraising dollars raised by the NCF.
