The growth follows a four per cent increase in first-year enrolment last year, the school said in a press release Wednesday. The college estimates total full-time enrolment will exceed 4,100 students for 2013-14.
“This is tremendous news for our college, Greater Sudbury and northern Ontario,” Cambrian President Peter Lawlor is quoted as saying in the news release. “These strong numbers tell us that we’re moving in the right direction ... We know that recommendations from friends and employers are the most powerful reasons that students choose Cambrian across every discipline, from engineering, health sciences, and community services to the skilled trades, business, and the arts.”
Cambrian is still accepting applications for full-time programs for the fall, and will report its final enrolment numbers to the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities later this month.
While final enrolment numbers will not be available until then, early indicators show that a number of programs are growing in popularity. A number of fields remain sought-after by applicants, including chemical, civil and mining engineering technician, personal support worker, carpentry renovation, electrical and heavy equipment.
Cambrian’s Schools of Engineering Technology and Environmental Studies, Health Sciences and Emergency Services, and Skills Training have shown the most growth in applications, while the School of Community and Justice Services has maintained its strong showing from last year. The college is also seeing more students enrol in part-time programs and online delivery options.
With more than 80 full-time programs and hundreds of part-time and online options, Cambrian is the largest community college in Northern Ontario. France Quirion, associate vice-president, student services, said in the release that offering programs that are in demand is key to success. That's one reason why Cambrian is always changing “to meet the dynamic needs of the modern student body, which includes learners of all ages.”
Cambrian is still accepting applications for all open enrolment programs. Anyone with questions about programs or applying to Cambrian can email [email protected] or call 1-800-461-7145.
