The presentation was made at the 2013 kick off of the 20th season of the Joe MacDonald Youth Football League.
“Constable Joe MacDonald has set an example for many by his contributions to our community,” said Mick Weaver, president of the Rotary Sunrisers. His personal involvement made our community a better place in which to live. He lived by the Rotary motto, 'Service Above Self,' and made the ultimate sacrifice serving his community.”
In 1993, Sudbury constable MacDonald was beaten and murdered. Two men, Clinton Suzack and Peter Pennett, were convicted of the crime.
In MacDonald's memory, his friends and family took his love for football and started the Joe MacDonald Youth Football League. More than 2,600 children have logged more than 135,000 playing hours since the league began two decades ago.
It teaches Greater Sudbury Youth team spirit, dedication and builds confidence on and off the field.
These efforts caught the attention of the Rotary Club of Sudbury Sunrisers, which made a contribution to the Rotary Foundation in honour of the MacDonald.
