NISA remains 'hidden gem' on 15th birthday

Being, Belonging, Becoming.

This is the motto of the Northern Initiative for Social Action (NISA) a mental health organization located in Sudbury.

This year, NISA marks 15 years of service to the community, providing important services and programs dedicated to those living with mental illness.

In honour of this event, NISA is hosting its Annual General Meeting and Anniversary Gala from 5-8 p.m. Sept. 26 at the Quality Inn.

“NISA is a ‘hidden gem’ in our community,” said Shana Calixte, executive director of NISA.

“Over the past 15 years, we have seen so many people come through our doors. They are looking for a place that will welcome them, without stigma or discrimination, where they can give back to the community. NISA is that place.”

NISA is an organization run by and for consumers of mental health services.

The organization offers programs that help develop occupational skills, nurture self-confidence and provide resources for recovery, by creating opportunities for participants to contribute to their own well-being and that of their community. NISA’s programs are funded by the North East Local Health Integration Network.

“NISA completely opened up my social life,” says Terry Jenkins, a member of the organization and trainee in NISA’s vocational program, the Dandelion Café. “I no longer feel isolated.”

The anniversary gala will showcase the accomplishments of the organization over the 15 years, as well as highlight some important events in their historical timeline. In addition, Dr.

Karen Rebeiro Gruhl, one of the founders of NISA, will provide a short talk about the growth of the organization.

Members of the community are welcome to attend the gala part of the evening, which runs from 5-6 p.m.
