Both Science North and the Big Nickel are set to mark important milestones next year.

Science North will celebrate its 30th anniversary, while the Big Nickel will celebrate its 50th birthday.

“Science North and Dynamic Earth have been major tourism engines for this community and for the north," said Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci, who announced $250,000 in support of those celebration. “I am pleased our government recognizes the value of these organizations and supports their continued growth and development.”

Major events are being planned at Science North and Dynamic Earth.

“This funding is a critical step in ensuring Science North is able to effectively spread the word to as many people as possible, and in turn position Northern Ontario as a top-of-mind destination for tourists during the year of celebrations,” said CEO Guy Labine.

Science North’s 30th anniversary year will include visitor experiences themed to the Arctic that will draw both residents and tourists to Northern Ontario’s science centre. “Arctic Voices”, a new blockbuster exhibition co-produced by Science North and the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa, will open at Science North on March 7, 2014. It's also the 10th travelling exhibition to be produced by Science North.

In February 2014, Science North will host the world premiere of the large format film “Wonders of the Arctic” at the Science North IMAX Theatre. “Wonders of the Arctic” is the fifth giant screen film to be produced by Science North.

Dynamic Earth will also host celebrations throughout 2014 in honour of the Big Nickel’s 50th birthday. The Big Nickel, an exact replica of the 1951 Canadian five-cent piece, will officially turn half a century old on July 22, 2014.

A large community party will be held on that date. In addition many activities and special events throughout the year will commemorate the Big Nickel birthday.

“The famous Big Nickel is one of the top roadside attractions in Canada and is recognized by people around the world,” said Julie Moskalyk, senior manager of Dynamic Earth. “2014 is a big year for us, and for Science North as well. We are dedicated to planning exciting events at both sites that will encourage first-time and repeat tourism to Sudbury and Northern Ontario, during the year of celebrations.”
