A 27-year-old British man who is running across Canada to raise money for children's hospitals was beaten at a Banff, Alberta hotel on New Year's Eve.

Jamie McDonald, who started his journey in Newfoundland in March, and passed through Sudbury in early August, had gone to the hotel to have a beer with some people he'd met on his journey, according to national media reports.

There was a group of people who took a dislike to him when he walked past one of the rooms. The three men dragged him into the bathroom of a hotel room, and started to punch me.

In scrambling to get away, he left a bag which contained his hard drive, wallet, and footage of his journey which he's been making into videos to aid with fundraising. The bag was later found by a hotel patron and returned to McDonald.
