On January 28, students from Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) schools won the gold, silver, and bronze medals at the North-Eastern Ontario Regional Elementary Cardboard Boat Race competition for elementary schools.

The competition, held by Skills Canada for grade 7 and 8 students, had 28 teams from various Northern Ontario communities gather in Sturgeon Falls to design and build cardboard boats.

North-East Ontario champions, École Ste-Marie (Azilda), stood out with a vessel that navigated a distance of 25 metres in 25.51 and carry a load of 458 pounds.

They, along with fellow medalists from École Saint-Joseph and École Alliance St-Joseph, will travel to Waterloo to take part in the Elementary Provincial Cardboard Boat Races on March 5.

Students were judged on the design and construction quality of their boats, teamwork, organization, security, creativity, team spirit, as well as the speed and resistance of their vessels.
