Eight local artists have been shortlisted for two cash awards to be presented during the inaugural Mayor's Celebration of the Arts evening May 1.

The CN Award for Exceptional Achievement in the Arts will be presented to a professional artist for his or her exceptional contribution to the arts, through an extensive body of works in one or several disciplines, as well as through her/his contribution over time to the development and betterment of the Greater Sudbury arts community.

The artists shortlisted for this award are musician/producer Dan Bédard, composer Robert Lemay, musician/actor/broadcaster Stef Paquette and visual artist Heather Topp.

“We are delighted CN came on board as the major sponsor of this evening,” said Arts Council president Vicki Gilhula, in a press release.

“It just fits perfectly. Sudbury was founded by railway workers. Our celebration is at the new School of Architecture, which is located in a former rail building on the city's first main street.”

Poet Daniel Aubin, playwright Mathew Heiti, musician Alexandra Lee and choreographer/dancer Lauren Pero have been shortlisted for the Sudbury Arts Council Award for Outstanding Emerging Artist.

This will be presented to a young professional artist for excellence and creativity of her/his artworks or performances.

The event, which takes place starting at 5:30 p.m., will be held at the Laurentian School of Architecture, and will feature live entertainment as well as catering by Speakeasy.

“We want the Mayor's Celebration of the Arts to be an annual fundraising event for artists,” said Gilhula. “We are raising money for bursaries to be presented to artists to pursue their art.”

Tickets for the event are $50 and are available at Artists on Elgin or through Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario by visiting their website at www.letno.ca/billetterie or calling 705-525-5606, ext. 4 or, or through any of the Creative Consortium organizations.
