Vale not certain when it will resume production

Vale has stopped all production at its Copper Cliff Mine due to a malfunction to a skip hoist mechanism Sunday, said a company spokesperson.

All employees were at the surface at the time of the malfunction, and there were no injuries, said Vale spokesperson Angie Robson in an email to Northern Life.

A skip hoist is essentially a conveyor to bring ore from underground to surface.

“At this time, the cause of the malfunction is not known, and the extent of the damage is being assessed,” Robson wrote. “The area has been secured, and underground production has been halted until appropriate repairs can be undertaken to ensure employee safety.”

She added the length of the production outage at the mine will not be known until the extent of the damage underground is fully understood.
