Olympic medals, national titles and more
The Grade 12 Lockerby Composite student represents hundreds of track and field athletes in the city who are eyeing top results at the city, NOSSA and OFSAA competitions this spring.
Inside the just-released May/June issue, Sudbury Sports Magazine caught up with former Sudbury track stars Ross Proudfoot, Caroline Ehrhardt and Serena San Cartier, all of whom have been making quite the names for themselves at the post-secondary level, winning CIS titles and setting new records along the way.
We also touched base with the city's two Olympic medallists — Rebecca Johnston (gold in women's hockey) and Meagan Duhamel (silver in team figure skating) — to relive those big moments at the 2014 games and to find out what's next in their sporting careers.
“The Olympics was the destination — the journey to get there was more amazing,” Duhamel said.
“It's an amazing feeling to be able to have one gold medal, but two is pretty remarkable,” Johnston said. “I'm on Cloud 9 a little bit I think.”
We also had an opportunity to sit down with each of the Olympian's parents to shed some light on what it's taken to help their children reach the pinnacle of competition. The parents were a delight to chat with, sharing enlightening stories of the younger versions of today's superstars and exhibiting the perfect balance of modesty and pride.
“I get a kick out of it that people want her autograph,” Johnston's father, Bob, said. “You don't realize the impact she has.”
In the health and fitness section, learn three moves to help you achieve a more chiseled core and consider why you should make yoga a part of your fitness routine. There is also updates on the athletic pursuits of a trio of former Sudbury athletes in Where Are They Now — maybe you remember Liza Grenon, Curtis Johnson or Ali Winkel?
