The late spring is causing delays in Greater Sudbury's annual street sweeping program, which historically has been completed by now.

“However, given the late spring (rain, slow melt of snow banks, cool temperatures etc.) experienced this year, the city's sweeping program commenced later than usual and will have a later completion date as well,” said a release from the city Monday.

This is the first year of a new street sweeping contract, with two contractors taking over after a troubled three-year agreement with an American company came to an end last year.

The sweeping schedule for the rest of the spring is as follows:

A & G The Road Cleaners Ltd. — May 12-27: part of the Marathon Route, Kingsway, Flour Mill, Downtown and hospital areas; May 28-June 3: New Sudbury, Minnow Lake and Moonlight areas; June 4-9: South End and Copper Cliff areas; June 10-12: Garson and Falconbridge areas.

Bruell Contracting Ltd. — May 27-31: Lively and Azilda; June 2-8: McCrea Heights, Val Caron, Val Therese and Hanmer.

City crews — City crews have swept all sidewalks and boulevards at least once this spring. They have also swept roads in Dowling, Levack, Gatchel, parts of the Flour Mill, areas of the Donovan, Onaping, the West End and Copper Cliff have also been swept by city crews.

City crews are scheduled to sweep sections of Onaping, the West End, Skead and Coniston between May 30-June 4. City crews will then help contract sweepers once that work is complete.

Anyone with questions about street sweeping or other road maintenance are asked to dial 311 for municipal services.
