Highway 17 expected to reopen by 9; detours set up around site

Two motorcyclists were killed Saturday between Warren and Hagar, the OPP announced this evening. The identity of the victims is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

"Preliminary investigation revealed that an eastbound car crossed the centre line and sideswiped a westbound vehicle," a release from the police said. "The eastbound car subsequently struck a westbound motorcycle with two occupants."

The male driver of the eastbound car was transported to hospital by ambulance with minor injuries, while the occupants of the westbound vehicle were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

"Both occupants on the motorcycle were pronounced dead at the scene."

A detour has been set-up for eastbound passenger vehicles through Sutcliffe Road and westbound passenger vehicles can take Nipissing Road in Warren then onto Sutcliffe Road. Westbound tractor-trailers and heavy vehicles are being detoured through Highway 64 in Verner to Highway 535 or onto Highway 69.

Eastbound tractor-trailers and heavy vehicles are being detoured through Highway 535 in Hagar onto either Highway 64 or Highway 69.

Highway 17 remains closed as officers complete their investigation. It should reopen by 9 p.m.
