Science North is responding to criticism that this year's Canada Day fireworks weren't up to their usual standards.

Members of the public have taken to social media to complain that the fireworks display was much shorter in duration and wasn't as high in the sky as they have been in previous years.

Don Jr. Marynuk, for example, wrote on Northern Life's Facebook page that they were the “worst I've ever seen at Science North.

“Couldn't see half of them because they were to low and behind the trees, might have been 10 min long. Next year we'll be going elsewhere, total waste of time and effort! BOOOOO!!”

Jess Watkinson also said she found the display disappointing. “You had to stand up to see them if you were by science north last year they were right above us,” she wrote on Northern Life's Facebook page.

According to a press release from the science centre, in previous years, the Ramsey Lake municipal boat launch has served as the launch site.

However, due to construction currently underway there, it was necessary to launch the fireworks from a new location – a barge on the lake.

“Unfortunately, this necessary change impacted this year's display due to the limitations of the barge and some technical difficulties encountered,” the press release said.

“The view of the fireworks in certain areas was also affected.”

Science North said it looks forward to welcoming the community again for Canada Day celebrations in 2015.

The press release said the Canada Day celebrations at Science North are presented in partnership with KiSS 105.3. and supported by Canadian Heritage Celebrate Canada, the City of Greater Sudbury and Vale.
