Sudbury's own young “Einstein” — recent Collège Notre-Dame graduate Henri-Philippe Marceau — will be attending an international summer program for young physicists in Waterloo.

Only 38 secondary school students, including 19 Canadians, were selected for the International Summer School for Young Physicists, which will take place July 13-26 at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics.

The program is for high school students with a keen interest in theoretical physics and who intend to pursue physics studies at the university level.

Participants will listen to presentations by Perimeter Institute researchers on cutting edge theoretical physics and will be able to exchange on topics such as superstring theory, quantum computing and dark matter.

Marceau will also have the opportunity to work with leading international theoretical physicists.

This graduating student qualified for this program on the basis of his passion and skills in physics and mathematics as well as his involvement in extracurricular activities.

While excelling in hockey, soccer, volley-ball and badminton, Marceau also contributed to his French Catholic school community by participating in the cancer Blitz and leadership camps.

In addition to his involvement in activities at his school and parish and serving as an assistant hockey coach, Marceau also worked as a soccer and hockey referee.

“Henri-Philippe is an outstanding student who excels in mathematics and sciences as well as in sports, which reflects the quality of the teaching and support offered by Collège Notre-Dame teachers,” said Collège Notre-Dame principal Johanne Chrétien.

“While Henri-Philippe will complete his high school studies very soon, we foresee that his success will motivate younger students to contribute to their community, continue to pursue their own efforts to reach their full potential and excel in their studies.”
