He retired ahead of the 2003 local election, prompting a record 14 candidates to run for mayor. Dave Courtemanche won with 19,152 votes, beating Paul Marleau, who came second with 11,360. A total of 57 candidates ran in 2003, compared to 52 in 2006 and 54 in 2010.
This time around, there are seven people running for mayor, a number that will likely grow following Mayor Marianne Matichuk's announcement in June she won't seek another term. Frontrunners so far include Ward 5 Coun. Ron Dupuis, former Mayor John Rodriguez and former Greater Sudbury Taxpayers Association President Dan Melanson.
Melanson and Rodriguez held events last week to unveil parts of their platforms, while Dupuis will hold a barbecue Thursday from 3-6 p.m. at his Notre Dame Avenue campaign headquarters.
Another mayoral candidate, newcomer Richard Majkot, will hold a campaign event Thursday, as well, at the Caruso Club at 11 a.m. Majkot was in the news a few years ago when he successfully fought the city's attempt to build a road partially on his property line in Lively, robbing him of enough land to build his dream home.
Rounding out the mayoral candidates are newcomers Jeff Huska and Jean-Raymond Audet, as well as perennial candidate Ed Pokonzie.
The most crowded ward race so far is in Ward 9, where veteran city councillor Doug Craig isn't expected to seek another term. Eight people have already signed up, compared to six who are running to replace newly elected MPP Joe Cimino in Ward 1.
Five people are running to replace Dupuis in Ward 5, and five candidates have signed up to run in Ward 11, where incumbent Terry Kett is seeking another term. The least-contested race so far is in Ward 4. So far, only Paul Lefebvre has signed up to run against incumbent Evelyn Dutrisac.
