The veteran city councillor is one of seven people running to replace Marianne Matichuk as mayor when the Oct. 27 municipal election rolls around. While summer is historically a bad time for election campaigns, Dupuis says he's ramping up slowly.

“Summer is the best time to have BBQs,” he said. “And last night we started door-to-door canvassing ... about 70 homes in the Flour Mill.

“I'll be releasing my platform gradually, starting in August.”

Until then, he's eager to hear what residents have to say, and so far, he's hearing leadership is important -- and having a city council that works together.

“They want the city to continue to prosper, to keep attracting new businesses here,” Dupuis said. “They want a city council that can get the job done.

“People are happy to talk – and are very vocal about what issues are important to them.”

While the last session of city council was marked by a lack of unity among the mayor and city council, Dupuis said getting people to work together is one of his strengths.

“I'm known as a team player,” he said. “We've got a lot of work to do (and) we need a strong leader who can get the team working together.”

With as many as six new faces expected after Oct. 27, Dupuis says he would hold a mini-boot camp for the new politicians in November, so they can get up to speed before the term begins in December.

“So on Dec. 1, we can hit the road running,” he said. “And we'll have a training sessions open to the public.”

Matichuk's recent announcement that she won't be running for re-election doesn't affect his campaign at all, Dupuis said.

“I'm a firm believer in sticking to your plan, no matter who you're running against ... And we've been doing that.”
