A local golf fundraiser reached a significant milestone when it chipped in $60,000 for cancer research this year.

Some 180 golfers hit the links at Timberwolf Golf Club July 24 for the annual Miners for Cancer Golf Challenge, hosted by Miners for Cancer. Organizers said this year's event raised the most money since its inception — money that goes toward equipment, patient care and research in Northern Ontario.

“This has been our largest and most successful golf tournament to date,” said Wayne Tonelli, president, Miners for Cancer, “We couldn’t have done this without the help of the 180 participants and the more than 40 local businesses – mostly mining related - that either sponsored the event or donated prizes.”

Miners for Cancer is a volunteer-based non-profit organization that started in 1996. Since then, the group has organized annual inter-mining industry hockey tournaments, golf tournaments, and galas that have raised money toward cancer studies.
