Greater Sudbury will launch a new parking payment system at its underground lot at Tom Davies Square beginning Aug. 18.

Motorists will be able to pay for parking at PayStations located on the municipal and provincial side of the parking lot before exiting.

Previously, drivers had to pay cash for parking when leaving the lot. With the new system, credit and debit cards will both be accepted at PayStations, as well as cash.

"We are excited to be able to offer this new, streamlined service for customers of city hall," Paul Baskcomb, the city's acting general manager of growth and development, is quoted as saying in a news release.

“With the new automated system, we are using technology to enhance convenience for citizens, by providing more payment options and ultimately keeping traffic flowing more effectively.”

And starting Aug. 5, the Paris Street entrance -- previously reserved for monthly pass holders -- will be open to all motorists using the parking garage. Starting Aug. 18, customers will be able to enter either at Paris Street or Minto Street, where they will receive a ticket with the simple push of a button.

“Once they have returned to the parking garage, but before returning to their vehicle, customers will pay at one of the two available PayStations,” the release said. “Once their ticket has been paid, drivers will scan their receipt at the exit gate, which will lift automatically.”

The garage will continue to be available for special events, at the regular rate of $3. And on nights when city council is in session, free parking will continue to be available. There are no parking fee changes attached to the automation system.

While the new system is being installed and tested, users of the parking garage are asked to note the following schedule:

Aug. 5-18: Minto Street entrance closed to public; Paris Street entrance opens for public parking; payments at PayStations begin. Cash only for the first week.

Aug. 18: Minto Street entrance opens.
