No reports of flooding in Sudbury by Tuesday afternoon

Despite warnings from Environment Canada that Sudbury could receive up to 60 mm of rain by the end of the day Tuesday, the Nickel District Conservation Authority has not received any reports of flooding by early afternoon.

“So far we haven't had any calls from the general public,” said Paul Sajatovic, the Nickel District Conservation Authority's general manager.

By around 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sajatoic said his staff measured about 25 mm of rainfall in Sudbury since early Tuesday morning.

“We don't know what Environment Canada has recorded yet at the Sudbury Airport,” he added.

Tuesday morning, the city took a cautious approach and listed a number of recommendations for Sudbury residents to avoid basement flooding.

“If there is a storm sewer grate near your property, check it for debris,” the release read. “If you can remove the debris with a broom or shovel, please do so. If you cannot remove the debris, please contact the City of Greater Sudbury for assistance by dialing 311.”

By around 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, Environment Canada lifted its heavy rainfall warning for Sudbury.

But the agency said there was still a risk for thunderstorms in Sudbury by Tuesday afternoon.
