It's thought the Ring of Fire in northwestern Ontario could generate up to $9.4 billion in economic activity over 10 years and sustain 5,500 jobs annually, but the development has stalled for a variety of reasons that the Ontario Chamber of Commerce is lobbying to address. Supplied photo.
Northern Development and Mines Minister Michael Gravelle is scheduled to deliver the keynote address at the 2014 Energy and Mines Ministers’ Conference in Sudbury, beginning Aug. 25.

The three-day conference, hosted by Collège Boréal, is a gathering of leading federal, provincial and territorial leaders meeting to share “best practices” in the Canadian mining and energy industry.

On Aug. 26, Gravelle will stage a joint press conference with Ontario Energy Minister Bob Chiarelli and federal Natural Resources Minister Greg Rickford.

The Wynne government promised to formally establish a Ring of Fire development corporation within 60 days of the July 3 throne speech.

The province has also been urging Ottawa to match its $1-billion commitment toward transportation infrastructure to reach the stranded mineral deposits in the James Bay region.
