Police took a man into custody peacefully Friday afternoon after an operation that closed Municipal Road 80 in both directions for several hours. Residents in Guilletville were told not to leave their homes, and the media were told not to tweet photos from the scene.
Police responded to a call from the sheriff's department in Guilletville after a man refused to leave a residence after he was evicted from the premises.
Pierre Imbeau, 52, was not armed, but refused leave the residence for hours.
“Through successful mediation we were able to resolve the matter peacefully,” said Greater Sudbury Police Inspector Todd Zimmerman.
When asked why police closed the road, asked residents to stay in their homes, and asked that people not post images of police locations on social media, he said it was to ensure there was no possibility for anyone in the community to be injured.
“We didn't have any obvious threats to consider, but we wanted to make sure,” he said.
Imbeau was not charged with any criminal offences, but was brought to a “facility.”
Zimmerman said a criminal investigation is ongoing.
Imbeau asked police to share his name with media so he could tell his side of the story.
