Arson suspected in Louis Street apartment fire

A Louis Street apartment fire on Aug. 26 may have been deliberately set, said Greater Sudbury Fire Services.

Graffiti was written on the walls in the soot from the fire, indicating the fire was deliberately set, said the fire department. As a suspected arson case, the investigation has been turned over to Greater Sudbury Police Service, and the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal has been called in, said Senior Public Safety Officer Mitch Theriault.

Firefighters responded to the call just before 4 p.m. Upon arrive, crews found a lone female tenant in need of medical assistance suffering from smoke inhalation. She was given oxygen while the fire was extinguished.

The apartment stove was also on high.

Forty people were evacuated, and two people are displaced. Damage is estimated at $3,000. The smoke detector in the apartment had been disabled. The fire alarm in the building was activated by a pull station, said Greater Sudbury Fire Services.
