Mayoral election debate to focus on seniors issues

All candidates running for mayor in the Oct. 27 provincial election have been invited to a debate on seniors issues, scheduled for Oct. 9.

The event is being held by Friendly to Seniors – Sudbury, the local chapter of the Canadian Association of Retired Persons in conjunction with the Older Adult Parkside Centre. A similar event was held at the same location in the 2010 election, and will be moderated again by Gerry Labelle.

From 1:30-3:30 p.m., candidates will field questions “of particular interest to older citizens,” a release said. But “those citizens of other ages available at this time are also invited to attend.

“As Sudbury’s older adult population continues to grow, there is considerable concern (about) the direction our municipality is moving with regards to accommodating Seniors issues.”

Of particular concern are taxes, affordable housing, maintaining infrastructure and health care, the release says.

The debate will be held at the Older Adult Parkside Centre in the YMCA building downtown. Refreshments will be available.
