A working smoke alarm is being credited with ensuring a resident of a Carmen Street home escaped with only smoke inhalation from a fire today.

Greater Sudbury Fire Services received the call just after 1:30 p.m. Three fire stations and 17 firefighters were on the scene of the fire in the two-storey home.

A resident of the home was sleeping at the time, but was awoken by the sound of a smoke alarm, and managed to escape the house with only minor smoke inhalation, GSFS said.

Although fire damage was moderate, the home did suffer severe smoke damage, the fire service said. Damage is estimated at $100,000.
