Former USW 6500 president dead at 82

Ron MacDonald, former president of United Steelworkers Local 6500, died Friday, Sept. 12, at Maison Vale Hospice. MacDonald served as union local president for two terms, and worked at Inco for several years.

Ron MacDonald, former president of United Steelworkers Local 6500, died Friday, Sept. 12, at Maison Vale Hospice.

MacDonald served as union local president for two terms, and worked at Inco for several years.

He also served as United Steelworkers Local 6500's steward, chief steward and vice-president.

MacDonald was an active member of the community, and sat on a number of boards including the United Way, the Cancer Centre Foundation, Cambrian College, NORCAT, Laurentian University, Health Sciences North, Science North, the Transition Board and the Social Services Committee.

He also served as a Sudbury city councillor and was later a director with the Greater Sudbury Taxpayer's Association.

MacDonald died at the age of 82. He had three children – Bruce, Brad and Brent – and three grandchildren – Kirk, Shelby and Lauren. He leaves behind his wife Jacqueline MacDonald.

His funeral will be held at the Church of the Epiphany on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 11 a.m.
