In a release Tuesday, mayoral candidate Ron Dupuis says he has a plan to develop Sudbury's economy and attract new business to the city.

Issued with the headline, 'Greater Sudbury mayoral candidate Ron Dupuis commits to power team of ambassadors for economic development,' Dupuis says he will use his influence as mayor “to help Greater Sudbury secure its economic development voice with new corporations and businesses across Canada and North America.”

A city councillor for the last 17 years, Dupuis said he has worked “to make Ward 5 one of the fastest growing areas of the city, both for new business development and housing starts.”

In addition to his Valley-area ward, the release said Dupuis deserves the credit for the success of businesses in other areas of the city.

“Dupuis has been responsible for the establishment of widespread industrial, retail and housing development in Greater Sudbury, including two Your Independent Grocer (YIG) locations, Tim Hortons locations, several retail gas outlets, the extensive retail development of big-box stores on The Kingsway and numerous housing developments in Greater Sudbury,” the release said.

“As a result of Dupuis’ efforts, the City has become one of the main retail hubs of Northern Ontario. Thousands of full-time and part-time jobs have been generated in the retail, guest accommodation and food service industry sectors for residents, including our youth, in Greater Sudbury.”

These developments have created jobs and increase the tax base, Dupuis said in the release.

“There has been strong economic development in the Valley and in the city as a result of my work,” he said. “I have cultivated a vast network of corporate connections across Canada, alliances with other Ontario mayors and strong relationships within the city. I intend to continue to leverage this network to attract corporations to our city as the new mayor.

“We are not just going to say ‘We are open for business’ like our previous mayors. We will show the manufacturing industries we are ready to do business with them by aggressively pursuing them and presenting what Greater Sudbury has to offer their company when they establish their facilities in Sudbury.”

If elected mayor, Dupuis said he will put together “a power team of economic ambassadors who will engage CEOs and boards of directors, presenting all the reasons why Greater Sudbury is the right location. The power teams will include local entrepreneurs who have already experienced business success by establishing their companies in Greater Sudbury.”

Other elements of his platform include:

Seeking out potential manufacturers and other industry to “ensure they understand why Greater Sudbury is the best option for their new business development.”

Taking corporate CEOs and board chairs on tours of the city, and engaging local businesses and corporations to be involved in these tours to strengthen our economic voice in board rooms across Canada and North America.

Working with staff and council to ensure we are “business-ready and business-friendly ... Our teams will show business developers that Greater Sudbury is ready for their business.”

Keeping the province on-track in their promise to four-lane Highway 69 South.

Dupuis would commit to a yearly meeting with developers and city staff to address and resolve concerns to improve the system. That includes simplifying the processes “so that developers can more easily invest in our great city. It is my commitment, when I become mayor, to ensure that building permits and subdivision applications are processed quickly and that long delays will no longer be accepted.”
