Boil water advisory for Markstay

The Sudbury and District Health Unit has issued a boil water advisory for all residents of Markstay who draw their water from the municipal water system.

The boil water advisory means that people who get their water from the municipal system should not drink the water; use it to brush their teeth; use it to make infant formula, juices, and ice; or use it to wash foods such as fruit and vegetables that will be consumed without cooking.

Water can be used safely only if it is first brought to a rolling boil and allowed to boil for one full minute. People should make sure that water used for cooking comes to a full boil.

The health unit is issuing the boil water advisory due to a lack of disinfection in the municipal water system. Chlorine must be restored and water samples taken to ensure the safety of the water supply.

“We are monitoring the situation, and until bacteriological testing of the drinking water indicates a safe supply, the boil water advisory will remain in effect,” said Burgess Hawkins, a manager in the Health Unit’s environmental health division, in a release.

The health unit will notify the municipality when the boil water advisory is lifted and residents will be advised.
