The Sudbury Downtown Independent Cinema Co-operative Corporation (SDICCC) has taken a step toward their goal of a new cinema thanks to funding from the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario (FedNor).

FedNor is investing $39,857 in SDICCC to develop architectural and engineering designs, strategic partnerships, and implement a marketing strategy to attract new members and promote the proposed facility.

The money was announced Sept. 18 by Minister of Natural Resources Greg Rickford. The funding is provided through FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development Program, which supports projects that promote sustainable community economic development, enhance business development and growth, and facilitate innovation throughout the region.

“Our Government is proud to help SDICCC in its efforts to strengthen the economic outlook for downtown Sudbury, harness the tourism potential of the local creative economy and help create jobs,” said Rickford in a news release.

“We are thrilled to partner with FedNor and the Government of Canada to capitalize on the immediate and long-term benefits an independent cinema will deliver for Sudbury and the surrounding areas,” said Ian Carlyle, board president, Sudbury Downtown Independent Cinema Co-operative Corporation, in a news release.
