The second annual Laurentian Leadership Summit will kick off Thursday, Oct. 16 with a keynote address from Stephen M. R. Covey, author of the best selling book "The Speed of Trust".

The best-selling leadership consultant, whose father wrote "The Seven Habits of Highly Successful People", will speak at Science North's Vale Cavern.

David Courtemanche, chair of the leadership summit's steering committee, said he expects around 140 local leaders to attend the event.

“The intent is to engage with leaders in a conversation around the future of leadership development,” he said.

While Sudbury has proven to have strong leadership in a variety of sectors, Courtemanche said employers often send their top managers elsewhere for leadership development.

“We believe there's an opportunity to create those kinds of leadership development experiences right her in Northern Ontario, and specifically at Laurentian University,” he said.

Before the Thursday evening event, the summit will host a pre-conference leadership workshop for 25 young leaders who will spend half a day at Laurentian University's Governor's Lounge to work on their leadership skills.

Jennifer Deal, a senior research scientist with the Center for Creative Leadership, in San Diego, will speak Friday, Oct. 17, at 9 a.m. at Laurentian University.

Steve Paikin, Laurentian's chancellor and host of The Agenda, on TVO, will moderate a panel discussion about leadership later that morning, at 10:30 a.m.

“If you speak to leaders in multiple sectors around the community, people see a need to take a more deliberate approach to thinking about leadership development,” Courtemanche said.

He said discussions that started at the first leadership summit, around developing leadership programs at Laurentian, are expected to continue at this year's event.

Registration for the summit is $450.
