In a news release Wednesday, mayoral candidate John Rodriguez confirmed he would not sell Pioneer Manor, the city-owned long-term care home.

“I will protect this first-class facility that continues to respond to the changing needs of our seniors,” Rodriguez said in the release. “Pioneer Manor is not for sale.”

Rodriguez also pledged to work closely with all seniors advocacy groups to ensure city programs and services address the ongoing and changing needs of the senior population.

“As a community, we must plan to address the needs of this important segment of our population,” said Rodriguez. “The City of Greater Sudbury must be ready to provide the support and services seniors need.”

In addition to keeping Pioneer Manor, he also promised to help older residents who want to stay in their homes.

“The cost to our society of helping our seniors remain at home is far less than supporting them in alternate care facilities,” said Rodriguez. “We must do everything we can to ensure these seniors receive the home care they need when they need it.”

Rodriguez said seniors who require long-term care must be able to access “adequate accommodations that provide quality and dignified care.

“I’ve spoken with thousands of seniors and their families,” added Rodriguez. “They have asked me to protect Pioneer Manor and that’s what I will do when elected Mayor.”
