Sudbury MP Glenn Thibeault feared for his life when a gunman stormed Parliament Hill today after shooting a soldier at the Canadian War Memorial in Ottawa.

“I thought I was dead,” a distraught Thibeault told NorthernLife.ca by cellphone while still in lockdown shortly before 1 p.m. “He was right outside our doors. There were 30 shots going. You could smell the gunpowder.

“I'm really at a loss for words. I just want to get home and see my family.”

Prior to his phone call with NorthernLife.ca, Thibeault had tweeted about what was happening, calling the experience the scariest moment of his life.

"We are still in lock down," he tweeted NorthernLife.ca reporter Darren MacDonald earlier today. "I will try in a bit (to call)... This is still active. There is still one shooter. I am safe... But security right outside our door ... the guy walked right by my caucus door ... shots were non-stop.

"I can tell you he somehow made it in... 30 or 40 shots fired... Right outside caucus door security came running in telling us to get down."

Nickel Belt MP Claude Gravelle isn't on Parliament Hill, but is safe in one of the more locked-down areas, according to Rick Prashaw, his legislative assisstant.
