“My thoughts are with everyone at Parliament, my MP friends, staff, friends and family in Ottawa and our city during this tragedy,” said Sudbury Mayor Marianne Matichuk, in a statement. “My thoughts go out to the soldier's family, friends and all those who serve in public safety.”

Prime Minister Stephen Harper described Cirillo's killing as a terrorist act.

“We will be vigilant, but we will not run scared,” Harper said in a televised address to the nation.

In an interview with NorthernLife.ca, Sudbury MP Glenn Thibeault, who was in Parliament's centre block when the shooter, later identified as Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, entered the building firing his rifle, said the incident was the scariest moment in his life.

“I thought I was dead,” Thibeault said. “He was right outside our doors. There were 30 shots going. You could smell the gunpowder.”
