News of Sudbury MPP Joe Cimino's resignation was a surprise, and many people took to social media to express their views.

Cimnio, 44, who won the NDP riding in Greater Sudbury on June 12, cited personal reasons for his sudden departure from office.

The resignation has sparked discussion and comments across social media and news sites.

On NorthernLife.ca and Facebook, readers are questioning his decision:

"Sorry folks I've said it before but he whined and whined when he was on council, how is it possible for him to not understand where the Ontario Legislature is and where Sudbury is and that maybe, just maybe it might require some travel between the two locations. What a waste of time and money, just amazing..." —Jack Love

"With Cimino, who is LEFT to defend the NDP stronghold in Sudbury?" —Son of Samuel

"What? You just got elected... Great... I also find the whole thing interesting. City council just got wiped out, the new council is going to hang the old councillors out to dry... what else? Andrea just retained her position as leader of the NDP. Yeah, 'health reasons'. I buy that... /sarcasm. There's a LOT more to this story. Expect things to break soon." —Travis Morgan

"Wow what a waste of taxpayers’ money, now there will be a need for a by election in that riding. Wish all politician that wants the honour of serving "the people" to seriously take the time and think about the demands these jobs will have on one’s family and possibly one’s health." —Art.

"Way to bail useless useless sucked as councillor suck as MPP." —Roger Bertrand

MeanWhile, some have expressed sympathy and echoed concerns over his resignation:

"Health and Family should come first .. all the best to you and your family Mr.Cimino." —Stanislaus

"Family and his health come first. We don't need to lose another man with a young family like we did with Mr. Belli. Good luck in your future Mr. Cimino." —Granny5951

"You don't even know his reasons for stepping down. What if it was found out he has a serious illness, or someone in his family does? You would resign too if that
were the case, and if you say you won't you're not being truthful. You have no idea the hardships these elected officials have to go through being away from family and what not. It is not easy. Show the man some respect, and don't comment on something without getting the full picture." —Robert McCarthy

And, in the wake of Cimino's announcement, many are left to wonder what will happen next:

"Now we have a chance to get a Liberal Candidate elected, and get back in the good graces of the majority provincial Govt. Joe is a great man, and I love the NDP and what it stands for, but the practical side of me knows that Sudbury only gets the goodies (like Maley Dr.) if it votes in a rep from the governing party." —Goldveng

"I love by-elections. Finally one close to home." —Devin Scully.

Cimino marked Nov. 20 as his last day in office. According to Elections Ontario, a by-election must be called within six months of the Chief Electoral Officer’s receipt of the warrant calling for the issue of the writ. The warrant is issued after the MPP has resigned or otherwise vacated his/her position. While no specific time frame is prescribed for issuing the warrant, Elections Ontario expects it will be done in the very near future.
