Surrounded by the who's who of the city's arts community, Greater Sudbury mayor-elect Brian Bigger launched the second Downtown Sudbury Art Crawl at a Little Montreal on Elgin Street on Nov. 20.

The event — organized by the Sudbury Arts Council — featured open houses at art galleries located at 18 downtown venues.

“It's an honour to be here to help launch the second of what I hope are many art crawls,” said Bigger, during one of his first official duties as mayor elect.

“Through the arts, the creative energy and talent of citizens of Greater Sudbury help enrich the fabric of our great city.”

The arts council issued the invitation to Bigger partly because the group is intent on reaching out to the mayor and council, said Sudbury Arts Council president Linda Cartier.

Besides Bigger, the launch was attended by several members of the newly elected city council, including Fern Cormier and Lynne Reynolds.

“We're very interested in engaging the mayor and the new council in the arts,” Cartier said.

“We have some initiatives to look at some of the economic impact the arts has on the diversity of the community, both from jobs, but also in how this attracts people and allows people to want to stay in Sudbury.”

Local artist and Sudbury Arts Council member Ron Langin said the first arts crawl — held March 20 — was a big success, attracting about 600 people. Going forward, he said the group plans to hold two art crawls each year.

“A lot of communities across Ontario and Canada have art crawls, and it's a way of introducing the average person to the cultural life of the city,” he said.

“We hope it continues to grow and organizations are starting to work with one another to promote these events. It's very nice to see that our new mayor and council are behind these initiatives.”
