Financial donations from corporate sponsors like Vale, Glencore and Tim Hortons, as well as many others, are vital to the Wild at Heart Wildlife Refuge in Lively.

Vale and Glencore dug deep, while Tim Hortons served up donations to help orphaned an injured wildlife get rehabilitated and released back into the wild.

Those three companies are corporate sponsors of Wild at Heart Animal Refuge in Lively, which has been in existence for more than 10 years. This year alone, the centre has cared for more than 800 animals.

Taking care of animals isn't the centre's only mandate, though. It also has an extensive educational and awareness program with a focus on wildlife and the environment.

Wild at Heart over the past year has built a new facility for the rehabilitation of deer, moose and elk. The project required proper fencing, and it was made a reality with a $25,000 donation from Glencore.

Vale and Tim Hortons each donated $5,000 to help make the refuge fully accessible for people with special needs, as well as finishing touches to both the building and the 1,000-square-foot educational centre. That's where staff and volunteers give presentations on wildlife and treatment program.

“We have an active education program for all levels of under graduates, interns and volunteers and have made many presentations in the community,” said Wild at Heart in a press release.

“We would like to ... sincerely thank our corporate partners for these donations. These funds will be used very effectively to help us carry out our mission. Wild at Heart is the only wildlife centre in Northeastern Ontario, and we fulfil an important role in the north. Individual and corporate donors are vital to our existence. Our centre is very grass roots and relies on volunteers.”
