The sun came out for Santa Claus and his elves to lace up for a fun run around Bell Park to help raise more than  $25,000 for the Salvation Army.

Noted as one the division's largest turnouts, more than 500 runners lined up at Science North for the 24th annual Santa Shuffle and Elf Walk on Dec 6.

Among the participants were the Nickel City Major Bantam AA hockey team. Having just won the Regional Silver Stick last weekend, the team will be heading to Port Huron in the New Year to represent Northern Ontario.

“This is going to be our fourth race this year,” said Nickel City coach, Steve Chenard. “This one isn't timed like the rest; it's more to get together as a team, have some fun, and it's for a good cause."

Race director Loretta Maillet said she was overwhelmed by the level of participation. With the final tally not in yet, Maillet is expecting it will exceed their target expectations.

“This event is held all across the country, and all the money raised here, stays here,” said Maillet. “We help the men's shelter, New Life Centre, Cedar Place, the women's shelter, as well as the family services on Notre Dame.”

The event was for all ages, with the youngest elves eager to participate.

Peyton Allen, 4, ran the one-km course alongside her mom, Candace, and little brother, Allen.

“Peyton loved the idea that she could participate, and help a family in need at Christmas time,” said Candace. “It's nice getting the kids involved.”

The Salvation Army joined forces with The Running Room to put on the event, with help from three schools: St. David, St. Paul and St. Charles.

Post-event refreshments, awards and a unique Santa Shuffle medal was awarded to all the Elves and Santas that participated.
