100 tons to help feed the less fortunate

It is an honour to serve one's country, but it's an even greater honour to be able to serve one's own community, said Sgt. Brett Tracanelli, 2nd Battalion Irish Regiment of Canada.

It is an honour to serve one's country, but it's an even greater honour to be able to serve one's own community, said Sgt. Brett Tracanelli, 2nd Battalion Irish Regiment of Canada.

Tracanelli was speaking to those gathered at the Sudbury Food Bank on Dec. 18 for the touchdown of the Edgar Burton Food Drive and Kids Helping Kids campaign.

For the past three days, Tracanelli and other soldiers with the regiment were busy travelling Greater Sudbury and collecting tons of food donations for the annual event.

“We deployed every vehicle in our fleet, and with the help of about 20 personnel over three days, we brought in as many donations as we could for this amazing drive,” said Tracanelli. “The real reward for us is going around to all the schools and seeing the amazing kids there. The kids are so excited to bring out their boxes of donations and help us load them onto the trucks.

“We've been doing this for more than a decade now, and we are truly faithful to this cause. We will continue to help out this cause for as long as we can.”

Those words were much appreciated by the many people who work behind the scenes to ensure the success of the food bank.

And they are all hailing this year's campaign a success, considering it collected more than 100 tons of food.

“We're still in the midst of picking up donations, so the final number is difficult to predict, but we are expecting to bring in more than 100 tons of food, meeting more than one-quarter of the food bank's need for the entire year,” said Mell Dahl, vice-president of the Sudbury Food Bank board of directors. “That's definitely one more can.”

To date, more than 950 tons of food has been collected. The food bank serves about 17,000 families every month.

“There's still an opportunity to give,” Dahl said. “If you find in your Christmas budget there's room to give a little more, we always have room for a little bit more.”
