Frank's Delicatessen, a downtown lunchtime staple in Sudbury for more than 70 years, closed over the weekend, its owners announced on Facebook.

“After 70 years of serving you, it is time to pause and reevaluate our business strategy,” the post said. “The industry has dramatically changed during our existence. This, along with evolving food trends and a fluctuating economy, has forced us to close indefinitely. We will use this time to rethink our approach to better serve you, our loyal customers.”

According to Frank's website, the eatery opened in 1939 on Durham Street and ranked as the oldest restaurant in Sudbury. Original owner Benny Haas opened the restaurant as Paradise Deli in Sudbury in 1939, before selling to Frank Fekete in 1945.

“Customers soon referred to the place as Frank’s and the business officially changed its name to Frank’s Deli in 1952,” the website says.

Fekete operated the business until he retired in 1961 and sold the restaurant to Hans Remetzky. The deli changed ownership a few more times over the next few decades – to Charlie and Liz Weiler (1990-1999), Alex Daroczi (1998-2008) and then to local restauranteur Mark Gregorini in 2008.

While the restaurant is closed, its pastrami and montreal smoked meat will be still available at the deli counter of Smith's markets “and we will be doing limited office and party catering,” the Facebook posting says.

“We thank you for including us in your life and look forward to offering you an improved dining experience ... This is not a farewell.”
