Same old, same old on jobs isn't good enough: Shawbonquit

Press release NDP candidate Suzanne Shawbonquit says broken job promises show how the Liberals have taken Sudbury for granted for the last 10 years. "In 2011, the Liberals promised an increase in funding for the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund.

Press release

NDP candidate Suzanne Shawbonquit says broken job promises show how the Liberals have taken Sudbury for granted for the last 10 years.

"In 2011, the Liberals promised an increase in funding for the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund. But even with a Sudbury Liberal at the cabinet table they broke that promise.

"Since 2012, they have left $30 million in Northern development funding unspent. The Liberals promised to create over 1,000 good-paying jobs for Sudburians with a smelter in Capreol. But they broke that promise too. Kathleen Wynne promised not to cut health-care jobs, but now we're hearing that 34 nurses’ jobs are on the line," said Shawbonquit.

"The Liberals won't deliver on jobs, and with yet another Liberal yes-man, they never will. That's why our city needs a strong voice speaking up for Sudbury and taking our voice to Toronto; not another Liberal dictating to us whatever Toronto wants.”

Shawbonquit says that New Democrats have put forward three clear, no-nonsense policies to create jobs in Sudbury. New Democrats will speak up for responsible development of the Ring of Fire, including ensuring that Ontario's natural resources are processed in Ontario; using targeted jobs and investment tax credits that reward companies making new investments and creating new jobs in Sudbury; and speaking up for education and training that will meet Sudbury's needs now and in the future.

"Whether I was working with TEDxNickelCity, Sudbury's growing Film industry, or supporting amazing entrepreneurs, I worked with hardworking, talented Sudburians. Our city waited for the Liberals to step to the plate for our city, but what we got from the Liberals is 5,000 people looking for work," said Shawbonquit. "We're known for our underground resources, but we need to recognize that we need to get all our resources--underground and above-ground--working for Sudburians, and creating jobs here that can pay the bills."

According to Statistics Canada, over the past 30 years, New Democrats have the best track record on tackling unemployment.
