A Sudbury woman shaving her head Jan. 31 as part of her bid to raise $10,000 to benefit the Northeast Cancer Centre's pediatric oncology program said she's nearing her fundraising goal.

Karen Yawney said she's already brought in about $9,000 for the Northern Cancer Foundation.

She said she was inspired to do something to help when she heard the story of a young girl related to a friend of hers who lost her hair because of cancer treatments.

Not only will Yawney be shaving her long, blonde hair at 3 p.m. Jan. 31 at Talk of the Town Hair Factory and Spa, she'll be donating it to Locks of Love to be made into a wig for a cancer patient.

She said she's going bald instead of just sporting a short haircut partly because she wants to ensure she can donate enough hair for a wig. But she also wants to raise awareness of what those undergoing cancer treatments go through.

To donate, visit www.canadahelps.org, enter Northern Cancer Foundation in the search bar, and find Karen for Kids with Cancer under the drop down menu.
