Press Release

Sudbury — Suzanne Shawbonquit, NDP candidate in Sudbury, was pleased to hear that the Chamber of Commerce held a panel to discuss the city’s future, and the role of innovation in Sudbury.

“We need to be talking about innovation. Our city is known for our underground resources, but I believe we need to tap into our above ground resources: our people,” said Shawbonquit. “I’ve worked with these leaders for years, and I look forward to working with them, as well as innovators and entrepreneurs from across Sudbury, as the MPP for this riding.”

Shawbonquit served as the creative director and producer of TEDxNickel City for three years. At TEDxNickel City, the majority of the creative thinkers Shawbonquit helped to highlight were innovators from Sudbury. She also brought speakers to Sudbury to spur innovation and collaboration in the city. Shawbonquit is passionate about building supports for creative entrepreneurs, having co-founded YouthInnovation in 2009. YouthInnovation developed relationships with 25 schools, two school boards and 10 First Nations, to help foster creative thinking.

“The discussion at the Chamber was great, but we need to do more. I’ve spent my professional life working with entrepreneurs, and I want to take those voices to Queen’s Park as Sudbury’s MPP,” continued Shawbonquit.

Shawbonquit has been involved in ensuring that Sudbury’s education system meets the needs of the community through her work on the board at Cambrian College, and she has been involved in bringing funds to Sudbury through her work as a Chair for the Ontario Trillium Foundation’s Grant Review Team of the Algoma, Cochrane, Timmins, Sudbury and Manitoulin Regions.
