Alliance makes waves at cardboard boat races

École Alliance St-Joseph from Chelmsford claimed third in the elementary school division of the Skills Ontario Cardboard Boat Race Championships in Waterloo, March 4-5, 2015.

 

Forty-seven teams from across Ontario competed this year.

Skills Ontario gave teams two hours and the materials they needed to build a cardboard boat to outperform their peers in speed and weight challenges. After two hours of building and eight heats of races each day, the winners of the Elementary (March 4) and Secondary (March 5) Skills Ontario Cardboard Boat Race.

Following are the results:

Elementary Student Championship
-First place: Woodman-Cainsville School - Team 2, Brantford, Ontario
Speed: 17.97s Weight: 709lbs
-Second Place: Woodman-Cainsville School - Team 1, Brantford, Ontario
Speed: 18.78s Weight: 595lbs
-Third Place: École Alliance St-Joseph, Chelmsford, Ontario
Speed: 20.5s Weight: 547lbs

Secondary Student Championship
-First place: École Cité-Supérieure - Team 1, Marathon, Ontario
Speed: 12.35s Weight: 657lbs
-Second Place: Eden High School - Team 1, St. Catharines, Ontario
Speed: 13.59s Weight: 586lbs
-Third Place: Eden High School - Team 2, St. Catharines, Ontario
Speed: 12.57s Weight: 550lbs

Eden High School now holds six of the top 10 all-time records for weight and
speed. Woodman-Cainsville School Team 2 is now No. 7 in the top 10 all-time records for weight performance, with their astounding 709 pound capacity boat.

“Student participants had a positive and rewarding experience that showed them their potential to succeed in a hands-on career through teamwork, creativity, and skills building,” said a news release. “The Cardboard Boat Races is just one of the many initiatives Skills Ontario offers to students across Ontario to encourage the next generation of workers to discover their passion for the skilled trades and technologies.”
